Korogaru yume is a site dedicated to the classic shonen anime and manga series Yu Yu Hakusho. If you are not familiar with Yu Yu Hakusho, I'd suggest checking out the tabs labeled Manga, Anime, and Characters. My purpose in creating this site, however, is not to pile unquestioning worship on the series. This site is devoted in large part to analysis, criticism, and reimagining of Yu Yu Hakusho. My rewrite of the series can be found under the SAISEI Project tab and my own peer-reviewed essays regarding the original series can be found under the Scholarship tab. This site also houses a modest Gallery of official art and a Fan Fiction library.
What is there to criticize, you ask? If you are familiar with Yu Yu Hakusho then you probably know that the official plot centers on Yusuke and his work as a Spirit Detective—hence the title of the series, which translates to "ghost files." In truth, though, half the series has nothing to do with the Spirit Detective premise. Six of the nineteen manga volumes are devoted to a martial arts tournament, while in the final three volumes Yusuke is neither human nor Spirit Detective and the story quickly deteriorates into ill-conceived political intrigues. For anime viewers, this equates to 60 of the 112 episodes. This means that literally half the series is in no way connected to the official plot. Additionally, the format of the Dark Tournament greatly undervalues many of the story's more interesting characters. The certainty that Yusuke will reach his final showdown with the arc's main antagonist means that, with just as much certainty, any competitors standing in the way of that final match will be defeated; as such, a number of characters with interesting powers and stories were dismissed prematurely. Finally, the last arc is so poorly planned that it's hard to follow the plot; many details conflict with already established elements of the story; the proposal of a Demon World Tournament to choose a competent ruler is nonsensical; and worst of all, our most beloved characters are desecrated and the core message of the strength of friendship and humanity is contradicted. In short, this beloved martial arts series went out with the most defeated of whimpers.
section of this site you will find my alternative Yu Yu Hakusho series. It focuses on Yusuke as a Spirit Detective and culminates with his fated clash against Sensui. Many of the cases from the first season keep their basic storyline but are written with new perspective. Characters or plot elements from the second season onward will be included as additional Spirit Detective cases. (Example: I would include Jin and Touya, but they would not be competitors in a Dark Tournament; instead, I'd build on their own underdeveloped story about being ninjas trying to establish a colony on an island.) In other words, read my works with an open mind. You may find yourself liking my reimagining of the series just as much as its source material.
And speaking of open minds, I have one last note. Many fan-created works on this site contain homosexual content (mostly involving pairings that were already established or suggested in the original series). I realize that this is an unsavory prospect for some people, so such warnings as boys love and YAOI are in place where I feel they are necessary. Be sure to read the warnings so that you don't see something you don't like, okay?
